Apple Cardamom Crumble

Looking to get your apple fix this fall? Apple Crumble is one of the go-to apple desserts, but why not spice it up a little bit and make this Apple Cardamom Crumble. Sweet, fresh apples and a little hit of earthy spice from cardamom are housed under a cinnamon crisp topping for a bit of a different apple dessert.

How to Make an Apple Cardamom Crumble

Step 1: Make the Apple Cardamom Filling

Chop your apples of choice into slices and mix them together with cardamom for flavor, lemon juice and brown sugar to bring out the natural juices and flavor of the apples and a bit of cornstarch to thicken the mixture while baking.

Best Apples to Use in Baking

The key in baking with apples is to use apples that are sweet enough for your taste that will also somewhat hold their shape and texture after baking. My go-tos are honey crisp, gala and pink lady, but feel free to experiment with your favorite kinds. One thing you can do is taste the apple filling before baking to make sure it’s sweet enough for your taste. If not, just add another Tablespoon or two of brown sugar.

Step 2: Make the Cinnamon Cardamom Crumble Topping

To make the crumble topping, add flour, oats, brown sugar, a pinch of salt, cinnamon, nutmeg and cardamom. Without the spices, the crumble topping would taste mostly like butter and sugar, which is great, just not fall enough for me. But feel free to play around with the spice choices and amounts to suit your own tastes!

Once the dry ingredients are mixed well, add in melted butter and gently mix until it looks like wet sand in the bowl, with some bigger pieces forming. And that’s all!

What Makes This A Crumble vs. A Crisp?

According to the dessert gods at Eater, a crumble topping has oats in it while a crisp does not. I decided to add oats into this topping to make it a crumble honestly just because I wanted to do something a little different than what I normally do. It definitely yields a little more topping, but to me it doesn’t change the taste or the texture that much. Feel free to leave out the oats and add just a little bit more flour instead to make this an apple cardamom crisp.

Step 3: Bake the Apple Cardamom Crumble

Whatever dish you use, just make sure to butter it WELL to prevent sticking and burning.

After prepping your baking dish, add the fruit mixture to the pan and then evenly layer it with the crumble topping. Bake at 350* for about 30-45 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.

Which Pan to Use

I used a 6-inch cast iron skillet, but you can also use a 6-inch or 8-inch round baking dish or a few mini skillets or 3-inch ramekins. Additionally, if you have a small casserole dish, that’d be perfect too.

There’s also the option to double the recipe and use a 10-inch skillet or a 9×9 or 8×8 square baking dish.
